Iteration

People look at a mediocre AI response and conclude that AI is not that useful. What they have actually discovered is that the first draft is the beginning of a conversation, not the end of one.

Lesson 3

The first output is a draft, not an answer.

The most productive AI users do not retype the prompt when they get a bad output. They push back. They redirect. They say "that's not quite it, what I actually need is..." and they keep going. The quality lives in the back and forth, not the opening move.

Iteration is a skill. It requires knowing what is wrong with the output you got and being specific about how to fix it. "Make it better" does not work. "Shorter sentences, less corporate tone, cut the third paragraph" does.

The first output is raw material. Specific feedback beats starting over.

Core principles

  1. Treat the first output as raw material. You are the editor, not the recipient.
  2. Be specific about what is wrong. "This doesn't sound like me" is a starting point. "Replace the third sentence with something more direct" is actionable.
  3. Ask AI to evaluate its own output. "What's the weakest part of what you just wrote?" is a real question worth asking.
  4. Follow up before starting over. One more prompt almost always beats a blank slate.

What does this lesson say is almost always better than retyping a prompt when you get a bad output?

Do this in Copilot

Fix the two weakest parts the model identifies, then answer its improvement question.

Paste this into Copilot Chat and work through it before moving on.

The iteration prompt

Here is something I wrote [or: here is something you gave me earlier]: [paste the content]. I want you to do three things. First, tell me the two weakest parts of this and why. Second, rewrite only those two parts. Third, ask me one question that would help you improve the rest. Do not rewrite the whole thing. Just fix what's actually broken.
